To join the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), you must be a U.S. citizen/national, have an HonorableorGeneral (Under Honorable Conditions)discharge, and have served in a recognized foreign war, expedition, or campaign. This service is verified by specific qualifying medals, badges, or special duty locations. [1,2]

You qualify for VFW membership if you have been awarded any of the following decorations or met these service conditions: [1]

1. Recognized Campaign and Expeditionary Ribbons/Medals

Having any of the following awarded and noted on your DD-214 automatically qualifies you for VFW membership: [1,2, 3]

• Combat Specific Medals:Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. [1,2]

• Historical Campaigns:Korean Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal (if awarded for service outside the continental U.S.), China Service Medal. [1,2]

• Expeditionary Medals:Navy Expeditionary Medal, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal. [1]

2. Combat Action and Expert Badges

If you did not receive a campaign medal, earning any of the following combat badges or insignias establishes eligibility: [1,2]

• Combat Action Badge (CAB)

• Combat Action Medal

• Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB)

• Combat Medical Badge (CMB)

• SSBN Deterrent Patrol Insignia [1]

3. Service Conditions and Pay

Even without a campaign ribbon, you are eligible if you have documentation verifying any of the following: [1,2]

• Receipt of Hostile Fire Pay (HFP)orImminent Danger Pay (IDP).

• Korea Duty:Served in Korea for 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days. [1,2,3]

(Note: Certain early Cold War occupation medals, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart are also included in the VFW's full eligibility manual.
